Al QUSTUL BAHRI
[The Marine Costus Root]
This is also a valuable part of Prophetic Medicine, just like Qust Hindi. It is also a root of a tree, and has virtually the same work as that of Qust Hindi, except that it’s texture is lighter, it is not as bitter, and it has less heat than Qust Hindi. A Hadeeth narrated by Imaams Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of Sayyiduna Anas (radhiallaahu ‘anhu) from Rasoolullah (sallallaahu’alaihi wasallam) states that cupping and Al-Qustul Bahri are among the best treatments. Hafiz Ibn Hajar Asqalaani RA comments on this Hadeeth by saying that this is in respect of all such ailments that are meant to be treated by it. Thus, whenever there was a need for a treatment with more heat, then Qust Hindi was prescribed, and when the need for heat was less then Qust Bahri was prescribed. It is also better to give children Qust Bahri instead of Qust Hindi.
